HISTORY: Tara was the second born to Trevor and Margaret Corner, in San Francisco, California. Her childhood was pretty normal - and quiet. She grew up with a loving family: two parents who were happily married and a sister she idolized. In her eyes, her sister was the coolest person around. She used to follow Rebecca around, imitating her and trying to act just like her. As a child, Tara was an outgoing, curious, and lively. She was never afraid to put her whole heart into everything she did. She was passionate and enthusiastic, and she never backed down from the things that scared her. In fact, she usually faced them head-on. That's why she tried so many different activities when she was growing up. Most of them she wasn't any good at, so she gave up, but a few of them stuck, including horseback riding and ice skating.
Tara's father was the only one in the family who even knew about the supernatural world. As a boy, he discovered he was a firestarter, but he'd gotten his powers bound to keep demons from trying to kidnap him. He never regretted that decision, but he always wondered what his life would have been like if he'd kept them. But if he didn't have any powers, he wouldn't be a target for demons and his family would be safe. To him, that was more important, so the Corner house was pretty normal up until Tara turned fourteen. That's when she received her powers. Adolescence is hard enough with the raging emotions, coming into your own, and trying to balance school, hobbies and a social life. Add on an explosive power that sparks up when you get emotional, and it's a nightmare.
It was a few weeks after Tara's fourteenth birthday when it happened. School hadn't been easy for Tara. She did great in class; she was intelligent and hard-working. When it came to fitting in, though, she had a little more trouble. She didn't follow the conventional rules, so she didn't quite fit in with the popular crowd. She did things her own way, and that usually made her an easy target for the snobby girls at school. It happened after school. A Monday, to be exact. She didn't live far from the school, so she rode her bike most days, except when it was raining, of course. She had just gotten a new bicycle for her birthday, and it was the first day she'd ridden it to school. Unfortunately, one of the popular kids and her lackeys thought it would be funny to steal her new bike and then stand there laughing at her while she tried to find it. To say Tara got upset would be an understatement. She closed her eyes, feeling a headache coming on, and before she knew it, the popular girl's hair was on fire. She ran straight home, terrified by what had just happened, forgetting all about her bike. She didn't know how, but somehow she just knew she had done it. The girl was in the hospital for a couple of days with third-degree burns, but she lived. Tara was never able to get over it though.
When her father found out about it, he told Tara all about the supernatural world. He told her what was happening to her and how to control it by controlling her emotions. He was worried the demons would come looking for her, but he didn't know who he could turn to for help. He had been disconnected from the supernatural world for so long, and he didn't want to risk someone finding out about his daughter. He helped Tara learn how to keep her emotions under check, and Tara was never the same. She feared her power, and it changed her. She was scared of hurting someone again, afraid that next time, it might be one of her friends or a family member. She became quiet and reserved - withdrawn. She kept mostly to herself, and refused to use her powers. Of course, there were times when she couldn't control it. But eventually she learned how to deal with her excess emotions. She hated how her parents treated her, walking on egg shells around her, but she was also grateful they never pushed her. That was about the time that Rebecca began resenting her. Whether it was because Tara got the powers in the family and not her, or that Tara seemed to get away with everything because their parents were too afraid that lecturing her would set off her powers, Tara never knew. All she knew was that her solid relationship with her sister had fallen apart.
She began taking Tai Chi not long after her powers manifested, as a way to help her cope with the stress and frustration. She hated what her life had become - hated who she was - but there was nothing she could do about it. So instead, she focused on not letting it take over. She wanted to manage it the best she could. She started participating in more active hobbies, like surfing and water skiing. Anything help her relieve the tension and get her energy out. She began focusing on the beauty of things like nature and art and became fascinated with photography. It was calm and peaceful. She liked that about it. Eventually, she learned to accept it, and, after graduating high school, she starting studying photography in college. She didn't dare move too far away from home. She was afraid that living anywhere else, somewhere new, might aggravate her powers. So she stayed in San Francisco, and she lives in a small, one-bedroom apartment not far from campus. She spends most of her time, when she's not in class, either at the park or at the beach. She still follows her own rules
