HISTORY: Let’s just say that Finleys past is an… Unusual one. His mother, Roisín, had lived with Gypsies for half a dozen years before moving back to some small Scottish village, still believing in magic. The superstitious community around her only deepened her belief that there was more in this world. Yet when she encountered ‘him’, the unsavoury feeling in her stomach was something she dismissed, just like his sometimes lifeless eyes. She wanted him to be perfect, having fallen head over heels for the handsome stranger. And so, blinded by love, she became pregnant of the handsome stranger – she never once said his name since Finns birth.
Some things just weren’t as easy or crystal clear as they seemed to be. Her pregnancy was a difficult one, full with dangers and near-miscarriages. Roisín hardly knew what was happening to her; her daughter had come so easily. But finally, after nine challenging months, Finley Aran Tighe was born. Roisín was thrilled – he would be an almost exact copy of what his father looked like, she had dreamt of it– the man that had stood with her the past nine months, supported her. Yet it seemed ‘he’ wasn’t his goal, his ambition to make a happy little family. Far from it – it was only an experiment for him. He could not deny his evil nature its actions. Only four months after the birth of his son he killed Roisín and left without a trace, leaving his son behind to be taken care of by whoever felt sorry enough for the little boy.
That happened to be a local hero – a journalist who had earned fame with a few touching and piercing articles regarding fraud, corruption and unsolved murders in the nearest city. The man was alone, and raised both of the children – Finley and his older half-sister – as his own. Finley had a fairly regular youth after that. Pre-school and school weren’t always fun, but not that hard, he loved the bedtime stories of his father. Nothing strange at all…
Until he was fourteen and his ‘father’ told him he had had a visit of a relative of him, maybe a week after his mothers death. He had left only a letter – something about demons and Mercurius… Turned out that he was part Mercury Demon, as his mothers research 'proved' that much too. Yet while he had believed in magic before, he still thought he couldn't practice a bit... That is until a 'staged' car crash took the life of his adoptive father, the journalist. He and his half-sister were split up, each to someone else to take care of them.
The next person to take care of him wasn't as good as the man he had called dad and father for his life so far. At age sixteen, he stole the mans camera, as it was one of the things 'that man' loved the most in his miserable life, and ran away. That's when his powers kicked in for the very first time; unaware of it in the beginning he shimmered away, giving the man a hell of a fright and himself an easy escape.
Of course, he was scared out of his wits, and in a strange environment. Because he had, unconsciously, shimmered all the way down to the African plains - with some rests in between. Enchanted by the beautiful surroundings and the 'magical' wildlife he stuck around. Survival was difficult at first - he had no money, no spare clothes, nothing but that weird way of changing place so suddenly. He sold his camera, found a job that was shady, agreed, but with no questions asked and a decent paycheck every month. With some of his salary he bought an old camera and started making photos. Some were rather good, even, and an old experienced photographer took him in as apprentice. He learned Finley everything he knew, and Finn did as best he could. His life was so totally different, on the African plains and in little african villages to live and take photos, and learn from everything.
Yet is was there as well that his true father, the Mercury Demon, showed up for the first time and forced Finley to cross his own boundaries. And he did, but not for long. Knowing that now, after his twenty-first birthday, his time was up here in Africa, he said goodbye to his teacher and mentor and went trekking through the bush for one last time, taking some great pictures he's only now developing. Once back in town, he bought a run-down motorbike and began his journey to America - up to Egypt, then through Egypt, the Sinaï desert, all through the Middle East, through southern Europe, to end up in Rotterdam. There, he booked passage on a ship to America - old-fashioned and romantic.
All in all it had been over six years since he had had a normal life, so it took some adjusting, but he fitted in fairly well - he had enough photos to get the odd jobs as photographer for newspapers, magazines and whoever else wanted to hire him. It wasn't a way to get rich, but he earned enough money for a place to stay, repairs on his bike and the occasional upgrades for his camera. He was fine with his life, but there came a time that he wanted more. After a six-week holiday (and work trip) to the mountains in South-East Asia, after which he returned to the USA - San Francisco, to be precise, to build an actually stable life.
It was around that time that magic started to play a bigger role in his life. The Mercury Demon that was his biological father, had set a reward on his head - either get him to kill an innocent and turn him evil, or kill him instead. He could defend himself good enough and survived the attacks, but it was 'thanks to' these demons he has set out to search his half-sister. They had been close as cihldren, and she was the embodiment of pure good. He hasn't found her yet, though. His assignments keep getting in the way - as a succesful and fanatic freelance photographer he doesn't mind being sent out to dangerous places. He takes the risks necessary to make great photos instead of good photos.
